Jay “Jaybird” Allen Knight, Sr, 80, of Smyrna, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Christiana Hospital.
Jay was born on October 15, 1938 in Centreville, MD, to the late John and Lula Knight. He was one of three children. Jay was educated at John Basset Moore (JBM) High School in Smyrna. After graduation Jay enlisted in the Navy from 1956-59 serving on the U.S. Vogelgesang DD-862 Destroyer.
In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Knight, stepson Jeffrey Stormer and sister-in-Law Pamela White.
Jay owned and operated the family’s welding company in Clayton for many years. Jay was a passionate man who enjoyed horse racing, feeding birds and gardening. He always enjoyed visits from his family and friends talking about happenings in the community.
Jay leaves to cherish his loving memory, his wife Jennifer of 17 years, brother John Knight and wife Betty Jean of Smyrna, sister Beverly Knight and husband Allen Atkins of Clayton, his children Jay Knight, Jr. and wife Melissa of Smyrna, Michael (Joey) Knight and wife Carol of Smyrna, Lisa Bishop and husband Robert of Smyrna and Christopher Knight of Roswell, GA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and his beloved four-legged companion, Woody.
