Karen Leslie Virdin, age 57, of Hartly, Delaware, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018 surrounded by family and loved ones.
She was born on June 12, 1961, the daughter of Shirley Voss of Smyrna and the late Leonard H. Voss.
Karen graduated from Smyrna High School, where she was a cheer leader and played basketball.
She worked as an Administrative Officer/ HR/ Benefit/ Payroll Representative for the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office for 39 years. She wore many hats there. She also taught Sunday school for 16 years.
Karen enjoyed spending time with her family and caring for her grand babies. She helped her husband maintain the family farm and she hunted in her earlier years. She also enjoyed trips to the movies with her sister and granddaughter. Karen was a skilled pool player and would beat most of the patrons at Lena's Bar and Grill, where she and her husband frequented every weekend. In addition to pool, she enjoyed playing keno there, and during the summer, she would visit Rolph's Wharf Marina if it wasn't too hot outside. Karen was always kind, patient, and gracious. The moment you met her, you couldn't help but love her, and she was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Walter Berton Voss, Anne Elizabeth Voss, William John Smith, and Effie Antone.
In addition to her mother, Karen is survived by her loving husband, David; her sons, David Virdin and his girlfriend Trisha Goodlin, Robert Virdin and his fiancé Jeanette Swyka, and Aaron Walls along with many other adopted sons and daughters, and her beloved granddaughters Jocelyn and Reagan.
She is also survived by her sister, Lynne Voss Lowman (Larry); as well as three brothers, Leonard H. Voss Jr., Lawrence H. Voss (Karen), and B. Kelly Voss (Marci), many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, her uncle, Rhesa Antone (Josie), and her aunt Debbie McCredie (Ian).
A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 6pm to 9pm and again on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 11am to 12pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna.
Funeral services will begin on Friday at 12pm. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover.
In lieu of flowers, contribution in Karen’s memory may be made to The American Cancer Society.
