Richard (Rick) N. Nelson passed away on December 14, 2018 at Christiana Hospital. He was the son of the late Charles Nelson and Beatrice (Petite) Nelson.
Affectionately known as Rick, he was born and raised in Queens, New York. He and his family have lived on Staten Island, New Jersey and eventually in Clayton, DE. Rick loved working as a NYPD Detective in Queens, NY and retired in 1988. After retirement, Rick worked as private Security/Fire Marshall in New York City until his move to Delaware in 2013.
Rick volunteered and served honorably in the U. S. Army and was sent to Germany during his tour. He served for two years.
He met the love of his life Janice Silvestri and they married in 1978. They were happily married for 40 years. He has 2 wonderful sons, Douglas R. Nelson and Patrick M. Nelson. He loved playing chess with Patrick and discussing war movies and trivia with Douglas. Drinking his “coff” and reading the NY Post newspaper, from cover to cover, were part of Rick’s everyday rituals. He also enjoyed watching reruns of Seinfeld. Another one of his favorite activities was going to the casino. The family loved vacationing together, especially taking cruises. Rick loved his family dearly and would do anything for them. Just getting together was enough to brighten his day.
Rick was a great storyteller. He would talk of his old Army days and also his “cop” days. Everyone delighted in hearing these stories. Anyone who met Rick liked him immediately. He was a kind-hearted person who only saw the good in people.
Rick was a good son to his mom and brother to his sister, Lorraine.
He is preceded by his parents, Charles and Beatrice Nelson, his brothers Charlie Nelson and Roy Nelson and his sister Lorraine Nelson.
The family is planning a “celebration of his life” event at a later date.
