Ruth Johnston Gallihue, age 81, of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 from complications related to a serious stroke.
Mrs. Gallihue was born on March 4, 1937 in Strabane, Ireland, the daughter of the late Harry and Jean Johnston.
Starting at the age of seven, Ruth developed a love of music and became an avid organ and piano player. She enjoyed playing for her family, friends, and church.
Ruth immigrated to the Philadelphia area with her family at the age of 18 and grew up in the Northern part of Philadelphia.
She went to Millersville State University for two years and then got married to her husband, Lester Gallihue, Jr. She and Lester then moved to California where she continued her education at State University of San Francisco earning her BA in Education.
Ruth then began her career as teacher in early childhood education, teaching for about 35 years until her retirement. She also helped her husband in the parishes where he served volunteering in the church schools.
In retirement, she continued to work in educational centers and enjoyed singing in church and community choirs. She also enjoyed extensive traveling around the world with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Lester F. Gallihue, Jr.; four sons, Mark Gallihue and his wife Suzanne, Joel Gallihue, and his wife Beth, Ian Gallihue, and Keith Gallihue; four grandchildren; and her aunt, Stewart Hanks. Ruth also has two sisters and a brother who are all living, Beryl Fricke and her husband Dr. David Fricke, Rev. Cyril Johnston and his wife Felicia B. Johnston, and Margaret Foyle, who is a widow.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 2 pm at The Peoples Church of Dover, United Church of Christ, located at 46 South Bradford Street, Dover, Delaware 19904.
